A proposed youth sports complex could transform Dubuqueâs riverfront and reinforce the islandâs role as a community and regional gathering place, guided by swagÂé¶čâs ongoing master planning work.
As part of an ongoing effort to enhance community amenities and support long-term economic development, the â the nonprofit license holder for Dubuque, Iowaâs casinos â recently presented the findings of a to the Dubuque City Council. The study outlines two primary concepts for a potential youth sports complex that would expand the existing ImOn Arena on Schmitt Island.
While not tied to any current funding commitments, the informational session sparked meaningful conversation among council members about the future of youth athletics in the region and the potential for a facility that elevates Dubuqueâs position as a regional destination for sports and recreation. swagÂé¶č; Design has played a key role in this ongoing vision, leading the development of the Schmitt Island Master Plan and partnering with the DRA to explore how strategic investment in recreational infrastructure can drive economic growth and strengthen community identity.
âThis kind of investment creates that âwowâ factor as you arrive on the island,â said swagÂé¶č Architect and Senior Partner Tom Ohle, AIA. âIt has the power to energize the community and serve as a catalyst for continued development on Schmitt Island.â
Consultants explored a variety of configurations before recommending an expansion that includes a large gymnasium complex with multiple courts and a second sheet of ice. The study reflects a growing demand for indoor sports such as figure skating, hockey, basketball, gymnastics, volleyball and competitive cheer.
âFunding is always the biggest challenge,â Ohle added. âItâs going to take a focused, committed team to bring this vision to life.â
