Fitness Theory (Module 1)

This module covers the foundational knowledge required for fitness instruction and prepares students to take the BCRPA Fitness Theory Exam, this is the first step toward becoming a registered fitness professional in British Columbia.

This module is recognized by the BCRPA and is your gateway to advanced pathways like Weight Training Instructor, Group Fitness, Yoga, or Physiology of Aging courses.
Module Overview
In this module students master the foundations understanding bones, muscles, toning, strength, flexibility, circulation, safety, basic nutrition, and exercise techniques all rooted in a safety‑first approach; keeping you and others fit and well in a safety-oriented environment. Introducing the role of a fitness leader in promoting healthy, active lifestyles while maintaining Performance Standards in accordance with Fitness Leadership Canada.

Module Requirements
Module (1) Pre-requisites:
There are no prerequisites for registering in Fitness Theory Module.
- Applicants must meet the general college admission requirements, which include being at least 17 years of age by the end of the first month of studies in the semester of entry and at least 18 years old at the time of the Fitness Theory Exam-BCRPA).
Module Recommended Materials: Resources are available online via Blackboard and in the DC Library. Students may purchase materials independently, but this is not required.

Module Completion Requirements: Upon completing Module 1, students will be guided through the required items below; these items must be completed after the Fitness Theory Module by the student to be eligible to move forward into the Weight Training Module (2).
- Rewrite of BCRPA Online Fitness Theory Exam
Students are responsible for scheduling and payment for any exam rewrites; payments are to be made directly to BCRPA. - First Aid/CPR certification
Required by all BCRPA Fitness Leaders. - First-Year Registration with the BCRPA
Students are responsible for registering and payment directly to BCRPA after completing the above items.
*Theses are NOT part of the Module fee and students are required to register and purchase these on their own; payment directly to external institutions, bodies and/or persons.
Additional Note: Students who wish to take only specific modules, such as Fitness Theory, to pursue other specialties are not required to complete the sequencing of the A-Z Personal Trainer Program.
Module Cost
The cost of the Fitness Theory Module (1) is $600,00 +GST and includes:
- Fitness Theory in-person classes held at swagÂé¶¹ (New Westminster Campus).
- Fitness Theory Exam preparation
- BCRPA Fitness Theory Exam in-person exam, held at swagÂé¶¹ (New Westminster Campus).
- Online materials via Blackboard

To register for modules in the program, students must contact the Continuing Education Registration Office (CE Reg):

Complete the registration form and submit it to cereg@douglascollege.ca via email.
Specify the CRNs of the modules you wish to register for in the form. CRNs can be found on the individual module pages.
Ensure you enter all CRNs for your chosen module. Please read the additional instructions provided on the registration form.
After submitting your completed form, a Registration Officer will respond with further instructions on payment options.
Once registration is processed, you will receive an email with payment instructions. Students must submit payment within 24 hours to complete registration. Students will only receive a payment confirmation email receipt once payment is received.
Registration is not complete until payment has been received by swagÂé¶¹. A confirmation email receipt will be sent once payment is processed.
